‘Dexter’ is probably one of the most universally well liked series of the past few years – although it did tail off dramatically towards the end – but do we really need any more from the loveable serial killer after he returned last year for the ‘New Blood’ finale? (There might be some spoilers in this article)

Showtime merged with Paramount+ last week and took no time in announcing not one but three ‘Dexter’ spinoffs. The most notable of these is probably ‘Dexter: Origins’, which will explore Dexter’s road to becoming a serial killer in his hometown of Miami whilst touching on various real life murders as well. I guess that means that we’ll be catching up with teenage versions of Deb and Dexter, as well as a real life version of Harry too. Cool I guess?
The network also announced ‘Dexter: New Blood 2’ that will continue the story of Dexter’s son Harrison as he explores ways to control his very own Dark Passenger and another series that will look at the origin of John Lithgow’s Trinity Killer. Seems like they’re really going all in on the Dexter Television Universe here hey?

Not really sure if I like that so much to be honest though. Sure, Marvel has shown that if this is done correctly then it can be hugely successful and popular and will cause people like Martin Scorsese to get really upset, but does this mean that every thriving intellectual property has to have a whole bunch of spinoffs revolving around it now?
We’ve already got the MCU and the DCU, a bunch of ‘Game Of Thrones’ extras and now a bunch of ‘Dexter’, ‘Yellowstone’ and ‘Billions’ spinoffs, so it seems like the scope for new and original ideas is going to be even smaller than it is now in order to include them all. Not sure if that’s a good thing to be honest, but hope you all enjoy your little spinoff shows.
