I said earlier today that we probably needed some answers regarding all these monoliths that were popping up all over the world before people started to get bored of them and now a designer had come forward and claimed that he is responsible for the one that appeared in the Isle of Wight over the weekend.

29 year old Tom Dunford actually originally stated that he just stumbled across the monolith on the beach walking his dog, but now has admitted that he was behind the structure on the beach, claiming that he did it purely for fun. Here’s what he had to say about his little caper:
The man behind the monolith!

If the aliens were to come down I think they’d go for the safest place which is the Isle of Wight in tier one. I was convinced it would be stolen in the first couple of hours.
When I saw the first one pop up [in Utah] I thought it was brilliant, the second one popped up and I had a text from a friend which said ‘you’re the man that can do this on the island’.
I’m absolutely fascinated in futuristic design, science and space. The actual idea sparked when I was walking back to the office and we had an old sheet of mirrored perspex.
I’m one of these guys, once I get a creative streak I have to just go for it, so at 4.00am on Sunday, December 6, I headed down to the beach to install the monolith.
I didn’t expect it to get so much media attention.
I’m going to leave it and let people take photos and go and collect it in a couple of days.
So there you have it. After another design collective claimed responsibility for the original Utah one and the one in Romania was attributed to an old welder, it really does seem that this global monolith trend has just been a load of people having a laugh with the general population completely independently of one another.
Kinda disappointed it wasn’t part of some massive viral campaign for a new video game or kettle or something, but I guess even if it had turned out to be that it probably would have been a bigger letdown than these designers. 2020 can do one.
For more of the same, check out the gold one that recently appeared in Colombia. Maybe that one actually has some special powers?
