Then I found these awesome photos of another exploding whale. The sperm whale was one of two which had died after being beached in the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic.
The guy in the suit that pulled the short straw is Bjarni Mikkelsen, a marine biologist at the National Museum of the Faroe Islands. I reckon he probably got a great deal of satisfaction out of slitting the corpse, it must have been like bursting the biggest zit in the universe. It probably kicked up a bit of a stink I’d imagine.
The guys involved had expected the whale to explode but it let off much more of a bang than even the science fellas expected.

OK, well I hope that hasn’t made you feel too vomitous? Imagine what a few tonnes of decomposing fish would smell like, mixed in with shrimp flavoured fart gas? I can’t and won’t imagine it.
