’28 Days Later’ was an absolutely massive movie when it was released back in the early 2000s and its sequel ’28 Weeks Later’ didn’t do too badly either despite the fact that none of the original cast returned and it was essentially a completely different story.

The obvious conclusion to the trilogy ’28 Months Later’ has been mooted for years at this point and both director Danny Boyle, star Cillian Murphy and scriptwriter Alex Garland have all mentioned that they would be interested in returning for it in the future. Now Boyle has revealed that the script has actually been finished for years, although he’s not sure if he actually wants to make it.
Speaking to the NME, Boyle said the following:
Alex sent me the script a few years ago and there’s a lovely idea at its core.
It’s properly good.
The original film led to a bit of a resurgence in the zombie drama and it doesn’t reference any of that. It doesn’t feel stale at all.
I’d be very tempted [to direct it]. It feels like a very good time actually.
It’s funny, I hadn’t thought about it until you just said it, and I remembered ‘Bang, this script!’ which is again set in England, very much about England. Anyway, we’ll see… who knows?
It might come back into focus because one of the things that’s happening in the business at the moment is it has to be a big reason for you to go to the cinema, because there are less and less reasons.
It’s hard for companies distributing films and for cinema chains to show films, they’re struggling to get people into the cinema unless it’s something like Top Gun: Maverick or a Marvel.
Maybe ’28 Months Later’ is the movie to get bums on seats?
Yeah, I’m pretty sure that would be a home run Danny. The original movie was really popular with a whole generation of people at the cinema and probably has another generation of fans after that thanks to DVD sales and TV showings. Just do it already and give the people what they want.
For more of the same, check out Danny Boyle talking about the possibilities of a third ‘Trainspotting’ movie too. Really pulling out all the stops there hey?
