We’ve all been dreaming of the moment that the world opens up again and allows us to escape to some foreign paradise where we can get our tan on, dip in the ocean, and party through the night like all those summers we took for granted before the pandemic.

Well it looks like Cyprus is getting ahead of the game on that one, and you’ll be able to head out there sooner than you think.

International air travel to Cyprus begins June 9, initially from 19 countries, with passengers required to undergo a COVID-19 test 72 hours prior to departure.

Why Cyprus though? Well aside from the fact everyone has an awesome time there, the Cypriot government has promised to cover all medical and holiday costs (except for flights) in the unlikely event that you contract coronavirus while holidaying there.

Via NY Post:

Cyprus is pledging to cover all costs for anyone testing positive for the coronavirus while on vacation on the eastern Mediterranean island nation, according to a letter obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The Cypriot government says it will cover lodging, food, drink and medication for COVID-19 patients and their families. Patients will only have to pay for the taxi ride to the airport and the flight back home.

A 100-bed hospital will cater exclusively to foreign travelers who test positive. About 112 intensive care units equipped with 200 respirators will be reserved for critically ill patients. A 500-room “quarantine hotel” will be reserved for patients’ family members and other close contacts.

Sounds like a sweet deal to me, and a pretty expensive promise from Cyprus who like other Mediterranean countries rely a lot on tourism for their GDP. So it looks like they’re just doing what they can to get people there.

Now obviously no one wants to get coronavirus, especially while on holiday, but if there was ever a place to get it, why not a beautiful sunkissed island where all your holiday and medical costs will be covered? OK there’s no word on whether they’ll also cover funeral expenses but hopefully it won’t come to that. After all there have only been 941 cases and 17 deaths in Cyprus, so sounds like they’re pretty confident they can keep tourists COVID-free, especially with travelers required to prove they’ve been tested 3 days before arrival.

So yeah, if you’re not ready to write off the summer of 2020 just yet, why not book a flight to Cyprus and have yourself a good old time? Think about the heads you’ll be turning back in the UK with those facemask tan lines. Better than sticking around in Blighty all summer eh?
