Not sure if there’s a bigger conflict in this country than the cyclists vs motorists debate as the two warring factions have a completely irrational hatred towards one other, but it looks as if the government could be stepping in to help one of the sides win a definitive victory.

The news is that the powers that be have commissioned a review into the country’s cycling laws and whether they should be moved more into line with those of established motorists. Possible changes that may occur as a result of it are that cyclists would be required to display licence plates, take out insurance for their bikes and also follow the speed limit on certain roads and the general rules of the road.
All of which I’m sure would be fully embraced by motorists, although probably not as much as if all cyclists were permanently banned. That’s the ideal solution for them here.
Anyway, here’s what Transport Secretary Grant Schnapps had to say about the review:

Somewhere where cyclists are actually not breaking the law is when they speed, and that cannot be right, so I absolutely propose extending speed limit restrictions to cyclists.
I don’t want to stop people from getting on their bike, it’s a fantastic way to travel, and we’ve seen a big explosion of cycling during Covid and since.
But I see no reason why cyclists should break the road laws and be able to get away with it.
Well, I didn’t really ever think I would see the day when I agreed with this government about an issue but this does actually make some sense to me. I think it’s a bit unreasonable how some road users get insanely angry at cyclists for getting in their way, but what Schnapps is saying here does seem beneficial to all road users and the report might end up going the same way too. Really does strangely seem to offer some real value for once?
I’m sure cyclists will have a lot of complaints about it though. Always the way in this conflict isn’t it? Never gonna end.
For more of the same, check out this expert saying we shouldn’t use the word ‘cyclist’ anymore because it’s dehumanising. What?
