So this video of crocodiles in Indonesia ‘pretending to drown’ is going viral this week. Apparently, the crocodiles of Indonesia got together and figured out that from a distance, their crocodile hands look a lot like human hands, and if they wave them in the air while pretending to drown, some dumb/delicious human will mistake them for a person and dive in to save them:

It’s actually a stroke of crocodile genius, if that is indeed what is happening here. Have to say, from a distance, it does actually look like a (chubby and black?) human is fighting for his life in there:

If you were out there in Indonesia and saw these hands waving and splashing about on the horizon, would you take a moment to ascertain whether they were human hands or crocodile hands, or would you impulsively dive into the water and swim out to rescue this ‘person’ and become a hero? I think a fair few people would do the latter. Well, maybe just a small handful now that the video is going viral and everyone is getting wind of the crocodiles’ sneaky feeding tactics.

I mean, it doesn’t look like this guy is falling for it anytime soon, to be fair:

It would be a hilariously dumb way to die, though. I wonder how many wannabe hero tourists this guy has witnessed being gobbled up by crocodiles already. He’s probably bummed out that we’re all onto it now and will think twice about diving into the water to rescue any flailing crocodiles pretending to be drowning humans. Oh well, I’m sure the crocs will come up with something new soon enough.
