Cristiano Ronaldo’s sexuality has never really been that up in the air – he seems to date women fairly solidly, although the circumstances behind the birth of his kid are a bit weird sure – but a French TV host has suddenly accused him of being in a gay relationship with Moroccan kickboxer Badr Hari.
Earlier in the week, reports emerged that Ronaldo was taking his private jet and flying from Madrid to see his ‘friend’ Badr three or four times a week. Madrid weren’t happy that he would finish training, head to Morocco, then fly back the same day so he could get to training in the morning. They thought that all the travelling could be affecting his form and to be fair they’ve got a point as even though Morocco isn’t that far it’s still a hell of a lot of travelling.
I read these reports earlier this week myself and didn’t really think too much about them – ‘oh yeah Ronaldo just really likes this dude, maybe he’s teaching him how to kickbox or something’ – but French TV host Estelle Denis put two and two together and came up with five by accusing the pair of being in a gay relationship. The accusation drew a strong reaction from the crowd.

Denis made the following implication:
[Ronaldo] takes three or four jet a week to see a friend in Morocco to cuddle.
To be honest, it IS kind of weird that you would travel so far to see your buddy for a few hours four or five times a week, but maybe there’s an explanation that Ronaldo isn’t gay, like my earlier suggestion that he was getting kickboxing lessons. And anyway, even if he is gay with this dude who gives a fuck, I hope they’re happy.
Obviously though there is a huge stigma against homosexuality in sport – I think there are only about three openly gay footballers playing in the world today when statistics prove that there should be much more – so one of the biggest footballers in the world to come out would be a huge story. If Ronaldo is and he does, then it could be huge for sexuality in sports – however the decision should be his and his alone.
