For the uninitiated, Johnny Somali is a controversial live-streamer from the US whose whole thing is basically to be as rude and obnoxious and unlikable as possible, and I guess he figured that South Korea would be a safe place to behave this way as the guy literally makes a living just by being a total pr1ck on stream.

Well, it turns out that even South Koreans have a limit on how much disrespect they’re willing to tolerate, and there’s now a whole collection of clips of not only South Koreans, but also Japanese and Western tourists attacking him in public after witnessing his antics. One South Korean even racially abuses him, which is unfortunate, but I guess that’s how much Johnny Somali is hated in that part of the world:

If you’re wondering what sort of stuff Johnny Somali gets up to in South Korea and Asia in order to ‘warrant’ these reactions, here’s an example:

And yet, getting beaten up in public is the least of Johnny Somali’s worries in South Korea. It turns out that when he showed up in the country last year, the authorities already knew who he was (he caused similar trouble in Japan earlier in the year) and so they sat back and took notes of all the crimes he committed on their soil; drug use, assault, disturbing the peace, creating AI deepfakes of other streamers, spreading North Korean propaganda, and more. He’s now trapped in the country and has been going to trial throughout this month, with his next hearing set for April 7. Somali faces 10 years in prison if convicted.

So yeah, not a good time to be Johnny Somali. Obviously we would never condone anyone getting beaten up, but it’s not exactly easy to feel sorry the guy either. Good luck at the trial, Johnny!
