Germany has one of the fastest growing Jewish communities in the world, with a population of 200,000 Jews. However, apparently the country still has a huge problem with regards to anti-Semitism, which company ‘Rent-A-Jew’ aims to change.

The initiative, with its insanely provocative name, was launched by the Munich-based European Janusz Korczak Academy. Its 50 members are leading seminars and private groups across Germany in order to reach out to non-Jews and provide the opportunity to socialise with the Jewish community.
Among them is Moscow-born Mascha Schmerling, who said:
We know it’s questionable. It’s there to provoke, to promote conversation.
People don’t trust themselves to say ‘Jew’.
But it’s all about context.
We don’t want to be defined by history.
It certainly does seem like they’ve got a good setup here, and it looks like they’ve got the chance to encourage conversation between the non-Jewish and Jewish communities. Some people might feel offended by the name of the organisation, but I guess if it’s decided by Jewish members of the public who only have good intentions, then it’s up to them to decide what is offensive and what isn’t.
