In the past couple of months – aside from UFC 249 – we haven’t had much in the way of combat sports to satisfy our cravings for seeing two people kick the living shit out of one another, so we’ve had to live off big personalties beefing on Twitter and not really going anywhere but this latest exchange has definitely got people talking.

MMA superstar Conor McGregor was mouthing off on one of his Twitter rants yesterday about who the GOAT of the sport is, when UFC legend Anderson Silva decided to wade in and challenge him to a fight. To the surprise of everyone, Conor eagerly accepted the offer and now it seems like two of the biggest names in MMA history might actually end up squaring off against each other.
Here’s how the exchange went down:
GOAT THREAD.
The array of finishes, across 2 divisions, with champion status in 1, Anderson Silva is No.1 MMA GOAT.
My array of finishes, across 3 divisions, with champion status in 2, I’m No.2. If not tied 1.
However still active, No.1 is fully secured by career end. And easily.— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) May 23, 2020
Clarity on Silva’s earlier no.1 spot. Most stylistic finishes on resume. Front kicks to face. Up elbow (albeit outside UFC) Thai plum knees leading to broken facial bones. Long list of jaw dropping finishes. Myself/Anderson have the most exciting/important finishes in the sport!

OK, so obviously this is just something that happened on Twitter and social media, but you have to remember that Conor McGregor said that he would fight Donald Cerrone on Twitter over a year before that fight actually happened, so he does have some precedence in this situation. Added to this is the fact that anyone who has even a passing interest in MMA would love to see Silva fight McGregor and it’s bound to make a shit load of money, then you have to think that this is something that might actually end up happening, even if The Spider is way past his prime now. Here’s hoping.
