There’s always this weird pressure after every celebrity death for anyone who ever worked with that person to make some kind of public Instagram or Twitter post, and thus far the cast of Friends have refrained from doing so. The comment sections on their Instagram pages are absolute dumpster fires; packed with people begging them to speak out about it, even though they probably still haven’t fully processed the news.

Well, earlier, the 5 remaining Friends released this joint statement in tribute to Matthew Perry:

“We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates.

“We are a family.

“There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.

“In time we will say more, as and when we are able.

“For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.”

Fair play to them for not caving in to the public’s thirst for their raw grief. They probably couldn’t put the statement off any longer, but it’s clearly a very measured statement that will hopefully mean people can leave them alone for a bit to grieve in peace. It’s a private and personal matter, after all.

Meanwhile, Gwyneth Paltrow said her goodbye to Matthew Perry publicly and let the whole world know they hooked up too:

That’s nice. You can tell she really cared about the guy and that’s a really sweet way of saying goodbye to him. Just goes to show we all grieve in different ways, and the Friends cast should not be expected to put out lengthy, personal, individual statements just because the public gets off on this sort of thing.

RIP the extremely funny and talented Matthew Perry:
