Christopher Nolan probably has enough credit in the bank that whenever one of his new movies comes out that it’s going to be a big deal, even if his last movie pretty much made no sense whatsoever.

Expectations of ‘Oppenheimer’ are high despite the fact that ‘Tenet’ was a bit of a dud, but I think most of us are just hoping that Nolan will be forced to tell a story that isn’t horrendously complicated if it’s actually based in reality. In case you were unaware, the movie is set to tell the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer – the father of the atomic bomb – who will be played by Cillian Murphy with a supporting cast that also features Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Josh Harnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Kenneth Branagh, Benny Safdie, Matthew Modine, David Krumholtz, Alden Ehrenreich, Josh Peck, Gary Oldman, Casey Affleck, Jason Clark and David Dastmalchian.
That’s a lot of superstars right there and now Nolan has whetted our appetites even further by claiming that he’s also been able to recreate the first ever nuclear explosion without the use of CGI for the movie. Here’s what he had to say about that, courtesy of a feature in Total Film:

I think recreating the Trinity test [the first nuclear weapon detonation, in New Mexico] without the use of computer graphics, was a huge challenge to take on.
Andrew Jackson – my visual effects supervisor, I got him on board early on – was looking at how we could do a lot of the visual elements of the film practically, from representing quantum dynamics and quantum physics to the Trinity test itself, to recreating, with my team, Los Alamos up on a mesa in New Mexico in extraordinary weather, a lot of which was needed for the film, in terms of the very harsh conditions out there – there were huge practical challenges.
Yeah that sure does sound like it was going to be a huge practical challenge, but the fact that Nolan is bragging about it months before the release of the movie kind of implies to me that he’s pretty satisfied with the results. I guess we’ll have to wait until next June and the release of the movie to see if Nolan is justified in his claims. Will probably be mightily impressive even if it doesn’t quite reach the heights of a nuclear explosion.
For more of the same, check out Christopher Nolan saying that he cut a scene from ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ because it made Matthew Modine physically sick. Rank.
