It’s common knowledge that Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears hate each other’s guts (not sure if that’s actually the case but it seems like something that’s true so let’s roll with it), and so it’s no surprise to read that Christina is still smarting from the fact that Britney got all the attention for kissing Madonna back at 2003 MTV Music Video Awards.

Everyone seems to forget – Christina kissed Madonna too! The only problem is that the producers cut to a shot of Justin Timberlake’s face at the same time because they wanted his reaction to Madonna having just kissed Britney:

And so because of that awfully-timed camera switch, Christina’s kiss with the pop legend was basically for nothing and Britney got all the shine for it. Very unfair!

In fact, during a recent interview with Rolling Stone, former network president Van Toffler revealed that Aguilera and her team were furious and lobbied MTV hard to get her smooch with Madonna edited back into the show for future airings:

“[She] caused a little bit of grief coming my way … It didn’t make life easier that night, but you have to make choices in a live show.

Sometimes you’re wrong and sometimes you’re right, but I think the beauty of the VMAs was the combustibility. You wanted to make it fun and semi-chaotic. That’s what we did.”

For whatever reason, MTV did not oblige with Aguilera’s request, and she’s since spoken candidly about the whole thing herself in a chat with Andy Cohen:

“It was weird. I definitely saw the newspaper the next day and it was like, ‘Oh, well I guess I got left out of that one.”

No hard feelings eh? Although I guess if I was Christina Aguilera I’d be pretty vexed about it too. I mean, she was way more vocally talented than Britney but always seemed to be in her shadow. For them to concoct this whole plan to go viral with Madonna (or whatever the equivalent of “viral” was back then) only for Christina to be left out of the footage is a total p*sstake to be fair. What was the point of her even being up there? Just made her look like an idiot.

Oh well, it’s not like she didn’t have a mega-career of her own in the end. Helped a lot of young lads through puberty with this one:
