Celebrity chef John Mountain has banned all vegans from his restaurant in Perth, Australia, following a complaint about a plant-based meal.

He announced that vegans were no longer welcome at top restaurant ‘Fyre’, before adding: “F*ck vegans seriously. I’m done. At the end of the day, it’s not what I want to do, they can f*ck off.”

Mountain told Perth Now that he was ‘close to tears’ after he received ‘overwhelming support’ from the public over his decision to ban vegans:

“The bookings have gone ridiculous; they have gone through the roof.

The support from people is overwhelming, I’ve had one of the best chefs in the country walk in my back door earlier this afternoon, give me a hug and tell me he loves me.

I guarantee you, 99 per cent of chefs across the world f…ing hate vegans.

Because they’re a pain in the ass, you can never please them. We’ve always hated vegans, all chefs have.”

Bold claim! He said the backlash had initially worried him after a bunch of vegans bombarded his pages with one-star reviews, but overall, the whole saga has been good for business:

“I thought this can’t be it, I know people don’t like bullies. Bullies in life, I despise them.

All the vegans turned out bullying me, trolling me, giving me one star when they had not even been into my restaurant. That is unfair.”

So what exactly was the complaint about this plant-based meal, anyway? Well, apparently Mountain messed up by forgetting a vegan customer’s specialty order because he was catering for a private party on the same day and it completely slipped his mind. So he apologised to the customer and told her he’d whip something up. In the end, she said her AUD$32 (£17) vegan meal was ‘unsatisfactory’, and complained the next day.

From Mountain’s POV, I guess he feels like he owned up to his mistake and tried to make up for it, but the vegan customer didn’t appreciate it. Which he wasn’t happy about because at the end of the day he runs a busy restaurant where people order from a carefully-crafted menu and here’s this vegan who wants a specialty meal created just for her. Which he agreed to do, but then completely forgot about. It looks like next time, he won’t even bother. Fair enough really.
