In somewhat of a surprising move, Burger King took out a full-page open letter ad in the New York Times and Chicago Tribune, proposing to McDonald’s that they should collaborate on a joint burger — the ‘McWhopper’.

So Burger King say the whole thing was inspired by upcoming Peace Day on September 21st, where the mantra is “Who will you make peace with?”. McDonald’s and Burger King have naturally been rivals for years so this is them doing their bit for the greater good I suppose.

Burger King already have the McWhopper design sorted as you can see in the featured image above.

Fernando Machado, SVP for Global Brand Management at Burger King, insists this is definitely more than a PR stunt:

We’re being completely transparent with our approach because we want them to take this seriously. It would be amazing if McDonald’s agrees to do this. Let’s make history and generate a lot of noise around Peace Day.

A nice gesture I suppose, though I’m not sure how long it can last considering these are two big time American businesses who thrive off staying ahead of the competition. But I guess for a short time only you won’t need to choose between a Big Mac and Whopper, so that’s something.

P.S. “A simple phone call will do next time” — bit of a cheeky jab by the McDonald’s CEO there. Just giving off those undertones that they still don’t 100% trust Burger King just yet. Don’t take that shit, Burger King. Better keep on full alert throughout this whole deal. And keep an eye out for that twat the Hamburglar.
