Very sad news today as Andre Braugher, who starred as fan-favourite Captain Raymond Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, has passed away at the age of 61.

The two-time Emmy winning actor played one of the funniest and most likable characters in comedy TV history on the show, and was simply spot on in every episode. By all accounts, he was a stand-up guy in real life too.

He was also known for this role on Homicide: Life On The Street, which ran from 1993 until 1999. It was a much more serious and dramatic role, and just goes to show what unreal range Braugher had as an actor. If you’ve only ever seen him in Brooklyn 99, it’s worth checking out some clips from his Homicide days on YouTube.

Braugher died on Monday after a brief illness, his publicist Jennifer Allen told the PA news agency.

His Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-stars Terry Crews and Joe Lo Truglio were among those remembering Braugher for his ‘irreplaceable talent’, as they mourned his sudden death.

Here’s a tribute Crews posted on Instagram:

Meanwhile Marc Evan Jackson, who played Braugher’s on-screen husband in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, shared a photo of the pair hugging while on set:

Just a sad day for comedy and acting in general, as 61 is obviously no age to go. The guy had such a unique deadpan delivery and was probably one of the only characters on Brooklyn Nine-Nine that you didn’t get sick of or irritated by, by the end of the series.

Braugher is survived by wife Ami Brabson and their three sons. RIP to a legend of the game and thoughts with his friends and family. Never forget:
