Here’s some good news to cheer you up on a dreary Tuesday morning – the UK is set to get an extra bank holiday in 2025 to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World World Two. Just in time for WW3!
The UK is set to celebrate the ‘Greatest Generation’ with an additional bank holiday that will include a four-day festivity, although no specific weekend has been chosen yet.
May 8 represents the Victory in Europe Day when Germany surrendered in 1945, followed by Japan’s surrender on August 15, effectively ending the conflict. According to reports, the idea is to potentially clear schedules for May 9 and 12 to celebrate nationwide or adding August 22 as an extension of the summer bank holiday on August 25 to create a four-day long holiday. That would be nice, wouldn’t it?
Which means for 2025, Brits are looking forward to nine scheduled public holidays, beginning on January 1; followed by the traditional Easter breaks of Good Friday and Easter Sunday; May holidays on the 5 and 26; the August 25 holiday; and of course, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. So this new bank holiday will be slotted in somewhere between the beginning of May and end of August.
While there’s been no official announcement about this yet, government officials confirmed that the celebrations would be of “national significance” and a list of events would be confirmed shortly.
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport told the Express: “The 80th anniversaries of VE and VJ Day will be moments of huge significance for our country, and the Government is committed to commemorating the occasions appropriately. That is why we have announced more than £10 million for events. We will announce the Government’s plans to mark the occasion shortly.”
Great news for everyone then. Well, except retail workers and the service industry. Really though, imagine if this new bank holiday to commemorate the end of World War 2 really does coincide with the beginning of World War 3? That would be a pretty ironic reminder of how few lessons were learnt since then. On the plus side, we’ll eventually get another bank holiday to commemorate the end of World War 3! Not that we’ll be around to enjoy it, mind you.
