A British zoologist who worked alongside David Attenborough on the BBC has been jailed for 10 years in Australia, after pleading guilty to raping and torturing dozens of dogs in abuse that spanned decades.
Adam Britton, who grew up in West Yorkshire before moving to Australia, pleaded guilty to 56 charges relating to bestiality and animal cruelty.
53-year-old Britton began his offending in 2014 and tortured and sexually exploited more than 42 dogs he had called ‘f*** toys’ until his arrest in April 2022.
Married Britton sexually abused his own Swiss shepherd pets, Ursa and Bolt, for almost a decade. He used Gumtree Australia to source more dogs to torture and kill at his estate at McMinns Lagoon on the northern tip of Australia.
Britton tortured 39 of the dogs to death, and would even film himself hurting the animals in what he called his ‘torture room’ – a shipping container fitted with recording equipment – and share the footage online with other sick freaks.
Britton pleaded guilty to 47 counts of animal cruelty at the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory yesterday. Unsurprisingly, his cruelty and depravity doesn’t stop with animals; Britton also pleaded guilty to four counts of accessing and transmitting child abuse material.
Britton’s crimes are so horrific that Chief Justice Michael Grant urged the public and security staff to leave the courtroom before some of the details were read out, and the details are not being made public either.
Britton would target pet owners on Gumtree who were reluctantly giving their dogs away due to work or travel commitments, and build a rapport with them in order to negotiate taking custody of their dogs. If anyone ever reached out to him to ask for updates on their old pets, Britton would say they were ‘healthy’ and send them old photos.
Britton shared images and video of his dog abuse with like-minded people on the internet and in a Telegram group, under the usernames ‘Monster’ and ‘Cerberus’ (top marks for self awareness). In a message read to the court, Britton spoke about his urges to a stranger on Telegram:
‘I had repressed it. In the last few years I let it out again, and now I can’t stop. I don’t want to.’
In the end, he was caught after someone sent one of his videos to the Northern Territory Animal Welfare Branch and the police, and eventually handed a 10-year sentence this week. No doubt there’ll be some Aussie prisoners who can’t wait to get their hands on him, and some prison guards who will be happy to turn a blind eye too.
As for Britton’s wife, she reportedly had no clue about any of this and has since changed her name and moved out of Australia. Can’t say I blame her tbh.
