It’s a day ending with a ‘y’, which means yet another Brit has been busted abroad for brainlessly smuggling drugs into another country.
I actually thought I was re-reading the recent case of Bella May Culley because the stories are so similar, but like Bella, 21-year-old Cameron Bradford initially went missing in Thailand, with her family becoming concerned and filing a missing persons report after she ceased communication with them.
It turns out mum-of-one Cameron had ended up in Germany, where she was arrested in Munich Airport as she attempted to collect her luggage, which contained (a currently unspecified amount of) cannabis.
According to MailOnline, Cameron had cancelled her flight home at the last minute and booked onto a flight to Munich, a move which raised a red flag amongst authorities.
Cameron, from Knebworth in Hertfordshire, now faces around four months in German jail before prosecutors figure out what they want to do with her.
Overall, she could be looking at a total of five years, which actually isn’t too bad compared to the sentences British drug smugglers are looking at in places like Sri Lanka, Bali and Georgia.
The Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office’s chief prosecutor Anne Leiding said: “We can confirm that we are conducting proceedings in this matter. The defendant is still in custody.”
A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting a British woman who is detained in Germany and are in contact with her family and the local authorities.”
Germany actually legalised cannabis for recreational use by adults last year, but this does not extend to non-residents, and even if it did, you’re obviously not allowed to smuggle the drug into the country.
Given the amount of these stories doing the rounds at the moment, surely we can expect the number of British nations smuggling drugs abroad to plummet, as they realise that the consequences simply aren’t worth the risks? At this point, how stupid/desperate must you be to even attempt such a thing? Although at least Cameron was smart enough to try it in a country where they aren’t completely zero-tolerance, will give her that much. Best of luck at the trial?
