Heartbreaking story out of Colorado this week as the body of a man who went missing in August was found up in the mountains with his dog still alive and by his side.
Rich Moore, 71, and his white Jack Russell terrier Finney disappeared on 19 August on a hike to Blackhead Peak, near Pagosa Springs. Taos Search and Rescue (TSAR) revealed the man’s body had been found on 30 October with the dog “alive and with his body”.
Rescuers had to be dropped on the mountain by helicopter for the initial search because the area was so steep, but found nothing. Eventually, Rich and Finney were discovered by a local hunter – with a team flying in to recover the body.
As per Sky News, Finney was taken to a vet’s for a check-up and treatment before being reunited with family. It’s just so sad to think that the pup stayed by his owner’s side the whole time, though you have to wonder how he survived for over two months up there. I admit – I did think that maybe he was surviving by eating off Rich’s body, but there’s nothing in any of the news stories to suggest that. Jack Russells do have a strong prey drive so I guess he could easily have been hunting small rodents or birds in the area, and maybe found a water source nearby.
RIP Rich Moore, but it’s some consolation to know that this very good boy is back at home getting the love and care he needs.
