The cousin of BLM co-founder Patrisse Cullors has died after being tasered by a police officer in Los Angeles. 31-year-old high school teacher and father Keenan Darnell Anderson had flagged down police after getting into a car crash and attempting to get into another person’s car ‘without their permission’, according to NBC News.

Have a look at the police body cam footage and see what you make of it:

Tragic. Yes it’s true that Anderson was acting sketchy and erratic as hell, and was possibly in some kind of drug-induced psychosis/paranoia, but he still should have survived the situation. Was it necessary to taser him while he was already being restrained (albeit with some difficulty)? Was the taser instrumental in his death, via cardiac arrest at hospital 4 hours later?

Anderson’s cousin, BLM co-founder Patrice Cullors, says:

“My cousin was asking for help, and he didn’t receive it. He was killed. Nobody deserves to die in fear, panicking and scared for their life. My cousin was scared for his life. He spent the last 10 years witnessing a movement challenging the killing of Black people. He knew what was at stake and he was trying to protect himself. Nobody was willing to protect him.”

I’m not convinced the police did much wrong to be honest, and it’s a stretch to say this is in any way comparable to the George Floyd killing, but he still should’ve survived police custody. I guess we can’t truly know what’s what until all the tests are done and they determine what exactly prompted his heart attack. A tragic death all the same. RIP Keenan Darnell Anderson and thoughts with his friends and family.
