Tony Addison was born full-sighted but, from the age of 11, began to rapidly lose his vision and by his early teens had lost 80% of his sight. Now, at 21, he retains just 4% of his sight.

Which you’d think would make it pretty hard for him to perv on women at the gym, but when he visited a new gym for the first time at 17, a furious woman accused him of doing just that. The poor lad attempted to explain that he was blind, but she didn’t believe him and had staff kick him out (I guess they didn’t believe him either?). Speaking on the Happy Hour podcast, he explained:

“I don’t really know where I am looking a lot of the time unless I am talking to someone like I know that I’m talking to you so I am trying to look in your direction.

So I was just staring straight ahead and unfortunately there was a woman doing some exercises. I don’t know what she was doing, whether it was some squats or whatever, where you may be in a more vulnerable position maybe and don’t want to be stared at.

She came over to me, and I didn’t know she was talking to me at first because I’m not doing anything wrong. I’m just doing my thing.

She said something along the lines of ‘Why do you keep staring at me? Stop. Don’t be so creepy’.

I was like ‘Oh no sorry, I’m blind’. I had my cane with me, it was folded up in my lap but she wasn’t having any of it”

Now obviously we’ve only heard one side of the argument here, but I’m not sure there’s really much point in hearing the other side in this case. You see, when someone is blind, they literally cannot see. It’s as simple as that. You cannot look at women’s butts or any other part of their anatomy for that matter, in the gym or elsewhere.

Tony was sitting around in the gym minding his own business, wondering what exercise he was going to do next, and his 20% remaining vision just happens to land on this woman’s derriere (not that he knew anything about it). Despite seeing his walking stick in his lap, she still accused him of perving on her! Tony even reckons that the woman thought the cane was a prop as part of his disguise to creep on women. How unfair is that?

I guess Tony is just going to have to pay more attention to where he’s ‘looking’ from now on. Meanwhile, if you’re a woman with a nice bum at the gym, don’t assume that all the men staring it at can actually see. Can result in brutal misunderstandings, clearly.
