Black British supermodel Anok Yai has told the British Fashion Awards to not nominate her for any more awards – after she lost out on 2024 Model of the Year to transgender model Alex Consani.

Anok Yai, 26, has been on an absolute tear in the modelling world in the last few years – modelling for brands like YSL, Tiffany & Co and Thierry Mugler – and had already  missed out on last year’s 2023 Model of the Year award, which was controversial because everyone thought she was a cert to win it.

And so this year, Anok was tipped to win the award for sure. Instead, the title went to Alex Corsani, who became the first transgender model to walk in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in October.

Following the loss, Anok posted a photo of Kanye West famously interrupting Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV VMAs, which was clearly suggestion that she had been screwed by the British Fashion Council.

She then shared a (since-deleted) Tweet where she gracefully congratulated Alex Corsani while also expressing her frustration over the situation:

‘Alex, I love you and I’m proud of you. British Fashion Council, thank you but I don’t want it anymore.’

‘If you have seen the effort that I’ve seen Alex put in; you would understand how proud I am of her.

‘But Alex can be proud and I can be exhausted at the same time.’

Here’s the pair of them together:

So it’s hard to tell what specifically Anok Yai is most annoyed and frustrated about. Is it the fact that she, a biological female, lost out on Model of the Year to a transgender woman? Others seem to believe that it’s more to do with losing out to a white woman, as she feels the British Fashion Council overlooked her because she is black. Maybe it’s a little bit of both?

In fairness, Anok Yai hasn’t put any emphasis on either factor, but she clearly feels that the decision was farcical for whatever reason. So much so that she doesn’t even want the British Fashion Council to nominate her for any more awards!

Which is fair enough, really. I mean imagine looking this good, dominating the modelling world, and missing out on the top award for two years in a row:

Here’s a few of transgender model Alex Consani – who Anok lost out to:

Who knows, maybe there’s nothing to it and Anok Yai is moaning for no reason. Or maybe the British Fashion Council thought that selecting a transgender woman over a black woman would bag them more “woke” points. Either way – Anok is far more beautiful than the winner in my view. Then again I’m just a casual who can barely name any supermodels off the top of my head, so what do I know?

I’d say ‘better luck next time’ but it doesn’t sound like there will be a next time. Anok Yai would rather not to be nominated for Model of the Year at all than be the token black girl year after year without ever being picked as the winner. Fair enough really.
