After a couple of weeks in hospital Kyle was beginning to regain consciousness. His eye problems, which turned out to be cataracts, were operated on and his bruised back healed. The doctors assumed his amnesia was due to stress and would be temporary, but so far, 10 years on, it hasn’t budged.

Kyle did odd jobs around the medical centre to earn himself a free bed. They wanted to pay him, but legally they couldn’t without a social security number. He left, frustrated.

Benjaman Kyle - homeless amnesia

There have been a whole butt load of attempts to pin down who this mysterious amnesic is but none have had any joy whatsoever. Here’s a small sample of some of the efforts already made:

  • Fingerprint comparison to the FBI‘s National Crime Information Center database of offenders
  • Fingerprint comparison to databases of military personnel and government employees
  • A Y-DNA test through the Center for Human Identification at the University of North Texas, Denton, Texas
  • A Y-DNA test for genetic genealogy through a company called Family Tree DNA in Houston, Texas
  • Various national and international TV, internet and radio interviews, including an interview with Dr Phil
  • Articles in local and national newspapers
  • Facial recognition comparison by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles with individuals who have obtained an Indiana driver’s license since 1998
  • Hypnosis
  • Perusing birth records from around the approximate time of his birth
  • Posting on and searching through missing person forums

Kyle himself has returned to the fateful Burger King where he was found on a couple of occasions; he’s visited local hotels, motels and restaurants to see if he can pick up any leads, an abandoned car, a vague recollection. But he’s come up with nothing…
