An Athens, Ga. teenager did what any sane teenager would do and enjoyed a massive spending spree after discovering his bank had accidentally stuck $31k into his bank account.
The teen shared the same name as the man who had initially dropped the money off at the bank, and a teller accidentally deposited it all into the wrong person’s account.
Within 10 days the 18-year-old had withdrawn $20,000 in cash and spent $5000 with his debit card. When he went to withdraw more money he was told about the mistake and tried to spin some tale about receiving the money as part of an inheritance. Obviously completely untrue, but nice try.
The bank has now told the teen there’ll be consequences if he doesn’t find a way to return the money. Still, it’s refreshing to see someone actually take advantage of the banks and their mistakes instead of finding a shit load of cash and politely handing it back like you always hear about. When this kid saw those 5 figures in his account he didn’t think “oh, this must be some kind of terrible mistake”, he thought “fuck yeah! God loves me” and did what any normal kid his age would do. Finally someone made the most out of the situation and went completely HAM with their newfound wealth.
But now what’s going to happen? Is this young man going to go to jail if he can’t pay the money back? He didn’t steal anything after all, he just spent the money that magically showed up in his account. If it was the other way around and the bank had lost his money they’d be bailed out and he’d still be screwed.
