The Band of Holes are orientated in a long thin line that runs for miles, roughly north-south in direction. At the northernmost end the line terminates next to a strange dark coloured section of earth that you can see in the picture below.

A few miles from the Band of Holes there is what looks like the remnants of an ancient settlement. The members of this forgotten town were quite possibly the culprits. The image below shows the site of the possible settlement, it’s structure is pretty similar to that of other ancient settlements throughout Peru.

So why, why, why were they made? No one yet knows. One theory goes that they were built for storing grain, but there are much better and easier methods of achieving that goal. Even if they had decided to cut thousands of holes in the cold hard ground it would make sense to dig a few bigger holes rather than loads of little ones.

If it was a grain store for the village, why build it in a long line that ends up miles from your house? You could just make the holes dotted around your village for ease of access when you got peckish. On top of that, unless your village was absolutely massive there would be no need for so much grain.

Another theory is that the holes were dug as individual burial slots. But there haven’t been any bones, artefacts, jewellery or inscriptions that might lend some credence to that point of view.
