A new documentary highlighting the treatment of child actors on Nickelodeon is now out, and it really is a sick look at how producers like Dan Schneider managed and behaved around various former child stars like Ariana Grande, Amanda Bynes, Drake Bell and Jennette McCurdy.

The Nickelodeon producers barely hid their depravity on screen, with weird clips like this one of an underage Ariana Grande being ‘sexualised’ for TV:

Yikes. It may have seemed harmless and innocent a the time, but as an adult watching that right now you can see exactly what they were doing. Although it’s worth noting that Ariana Grande has never come out with anything negative about Dan Schneider or her time on Nickelodeon, maybe because she got off relatively scot-free, or maybe because she’s now one of the most famous and successful superstars on the planet?

Here’s another clip of Dan Schneider in a hot tub with 16-year-old Amanda Bynes:

For what it’s worth, Dan Schneider initially responded to the backlash over these resurfaced clips by claiming there was nothing intentionally “sexual” about them at all, and that adults were ‘projecting’ their own adult minds onto kids’ shows. Which maybe you could say about the Amanda Bynes hot tub clip, but definitely not the Ariana Grande one. After watching the “Quiet On Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” documentary though, Schneider has now apologised for his behaviour on set, saying the following:

“Watching over the past two nights was very difficult. Facing my past behaviors, some of which are embarrassing and that I regret. I definitely owe some people a pretty strong apology. It was wrong that I ever put anybody in that position. It was the wrong thing to do. I’d never do it today. I’m embarrassed that I did it then. I apologize to anybody that I ever put in that situation. Additionally, I apologize to the people who were walking around video village, or wherever they happened, because there were lots of people there who witnessed it who also may have felt uncomfortable, so I owe them an apology as well.”

He also suggested that edits be made to episodes that offend anybody, so that’s nice. Dan Schneider isn’t the only one who should be offering apologies though, with some of his colleagues/employees at Nickelodeon also allegedly mistreating child actors:

Sick stuff indeed. Furthermore, another child star, Jennette McCurdy, wrote in her memoir that Nickelodeon offered her $300,000 as hush money after Dan Schneider pressured her into drinking wine and gave her massages, all while she was well underage.

Will be interesting to see what Ariana Grande makes of all this seeing as she’s one of the most successful people to have come out of the Nickelodeon universe and a powerful voice in showbusiness. We’ll leave you with this meme in case you’re not sufficiently grossed out already:
