Being a football referee in South America is one of the most dangerous jobs on the world. Who could forget the Brazilian referee who was decapitated by a group of fans a few years back?
Especially when dealing with lower tier leagues, you’ll be lucky to escape the pitch at full-time without being brutally assaulted. All you have to do is make a call that someone disagrees with. Which brings us to this 3rd division game in Argentina between Deportivo Independencia and Garmense…

Welp, if you thought having a female referee out there would make a blind bit of difference, there goes that theory. Not only are the fans scumbags, but it turns out the players are too! The good news is that the player, 34-year-old Cristian Tirone, was arrested shortly after and given a lifetime ban, so at least someone out there realises that punching out a referee for showing you a yellow card isn’t an OK thing to do.
Big up referee Dalma Cortadi for taking that shot like a champ, though. Yeah OK she went down pretty hard but she popped right back up. Hopefully she’s all healed up and back officiating in no time.
