An anti-vax Czech folk singer has died after deliberately catching Covid to obtain a health pass to allow her to visit the sauna and theatre, reports MailOnline.
Hanka Horka, vocalist for the band Asonance, died on Sunday after contracting the Delta variant at the age of 57, according to her son Jan Rek. She voluntarily exposed herself to the virus when her husband and son, both vaccinated, caught it before Christmas.
The idea was that this would allow her to obtain a health pass in order to visit spas and restaurants and such in the Czech Republic, with the requirement being either proof of vaccination or a recent infection.
Up until two days before her death, the plan was going smoothly. Hanka put up a status on Facebook announcing she had survived the virus:
Two days after posting that, Hanka went for a walk outside but when she returned she started to complain about back pain and soon after, died choking in her bed.
Rek blamed the death on a local anti-vax movement, saying its leaders had brainwashed his mum against vaccination and had ‘blood on their hands’:
She decided to continue to live normally with us and preferred to catch the disease than to get vaccinated.
I know exactly who influenced her… It makes me sad that she believed strangers more than her proper family.
It wasn’t just total disinformation but also views on natural immunity and antibodies acquired through infection.
What irks me about news like this is how many people there are on social media celebrating any time an anti-vaxxer dies from Covid. I understand the urge to point the finger and say “Hah! Serves you right!”, but this is a fellow human being who has died for no good reason. Obviously we should all be free to make our own personal decisions re getting vaccinated, and it’s down to you to assess the information out there and do what’s best for you. Whatever you decide though, I don’t think catching the virus on purpose is a great idea. As Hanka found out the hard way.
