Indonesian authorities have ordered eight people who broke the country’s face mask laws to dig graves for COVID-19 victims, according to the Jakarta Post.

The province of East Java punished the rulebreakers by having them dig graves at a local cemetery in hopes of deterring others from also disregarding the nationwide face-covering mandate.

Politician Haryono Suyono told the Post:

There are only three available gravediggers at the moment, so I thought I might as well put these people to work with them.

Hopefully this can create a deterrent effect against violations.

Well that’s one way to go about it. Indonesia has seen infections on the rise with more than 221,000 cases, including at least 8,841 deaths, so it’s still a major issue over there. I’m not gonna get into a whole thing over whether we should be wearing masks or not, but I think most sensible people are wearing them just in case. In fact you now look like a douche walking around the shops without one while everyone else is.

Anyway, a genius move here by Indonesia. Not only is it a fitting punishment and deterrent but it also solves the problem of the gravedigger shortage like Mr. Suyono said, especially at a time where so many people are still dropping dead from the virus. In fact it would be pretty cool if this tactic was deployed elsewhere too. Like for these anti-masker idiots over in Utah, for example:

What a world.
