The news was announced by ISIS themselves in a statement they released yesterday, saying the following:
Abu Muhammad al-Adnani was martyred while surveying the operations to repel the military campaigns against Aleppo (Syria). His death will be avenged.

Al-Adnani was one of the jihadist group’s highest ranking and longest serving officials so this will be a major blow to them. He was responsible for co-ordinating attacks against the west – claiming to have masterminded the recent European terror attacks – and also acted as the mouthpiece of ISIS in recent years, preaching on several YouTube sermons and influencing several lone wolf attackers. He was also said to be next in line to succeed current ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
Clearly, it’s therefore a massive deal that someone succeeded in popping him and hopefully this will lead to a decline in the effectiveness of ISIS and their terror attacks on the West. It’s unclear yet whether he was killed in an airstrike or a ground attack, but either way it’s great news and the latest in a long line of setbacks that ISIS have been facing. Right on.
