Andrew Cauchi, the father of Joel Cauchi, who carried out the attack at Westfield shopping mall in Sydney that killed six people on the weekend, has spoken to 7 News about his son and the likely motivation behind the attack:

Gut-wrenching stuff. I can’t even begin to imagine how much pain Andrew Cauchi and his family are in right now, but it’s easy to forget that they are victims in all this too. His son might be a murderer and a monster who took six lives and devastated an entire country, but to him he was his boy Joel who was unwell.

Andrew Cauchi also seems to confirm that theory that Joel specifically targeted women during the attack, having gone full incel due to a combination of his mental health struggles, his frustration at being single, and his lack of social skills.

Let’s hope the family have some support and are otherwise left alone to come to terms with this. A real class act from Andrew Cauchi to speak to the media about it in the first place, especially when it’s still so raw.
