NFL isn’t really one of my favourite sports – after sitting through a game at Wembley over the weekend I’m positive of that – but it does occasionally feature moments of sheer brilliance and stupidity that make it worth checking out every now and again. This is one of those moments.
It went down over the weekend in a college game between Utah and Oregon when Utah were just about to hit a 78 yard touchdown. The guy who caught the ball and ran it into the end zone was a dude called Kaelin Clay and he got a bit too excited about the fact that he had scored. So much so, that he actually forgot to score.
You see, in case you’re unfamiliar with the rules of American football, you need to carry the ball into the end zone or catch it in the end zone for the point to count. Clay was so excited about scoring that touchdown that he actually dropped the ball before he was in the end zone. When this happens, the ball is live and whichever team picks it up has possession until they’re tackled, so Oregon linebacker Joe Walker picked it up and ran the whole length of the field with it to score the other end. Whoops.
I bet Clay felt like an absolute idiot. To make it even worse that would have made the score 14-0 to Utah, whereas now it was 7-7. Oregon went on to win the match 51 -27. Looks like Kaelin Clay can kiss a career in the NFL goodbye. Even if he takes tips off this guy who can throw a hail mary pass to himself it’s doubtful he’ll be able to bounce back from this. See ya.
