James Gilbert Kwarteng, of Palma de Mallorca, Spain, would fill up the ordered items’ boxes with dirt and register with the exact weight of the product he ordered. He would then receive a refund from Amazon and sell the original item, according to Fox Business.
The return packages would end up sitting around in Amazon’s warehouses where they’re hardly ever checked. James carried on his scam to the tune of $370k until a random search where someone opened a box and discovered it was full of dirt.
Amazon’s return policy states items shipped from the website, including Amazon Warehouse, can be returned within 30 days of receipt. Refunds are processed in two business days and customers can expect their funds to show in their account in 3-5 business days.
What an absolute legend this young man is. An absolute stroke of genius – well, except for the part where he got caught and is probably going to spend some time in jail. But I bet while he was pulling off the scam and the $$$ was accumulating he felt pretty awesome. Just sitting at home and stealing what basically amounts to a drop in the ocean for the largest internet retailer in the world.
Should James Gilbert Kwarteng even go to jail for this? After all Amazon stole his data and everyone else’s all the time, and they get away with it because of all the small print and terms and conditions that no one can be arsed to read. Yeah I know that’s not the same thing at all but I’m just trying to stick up for James Gilbert Kwarteng here after her scored one for the little guys – you and me – vs one of the most mammoth corporations in the world. One to keep an eye on (once he’s out of prison).
