Actress and ‘defund the police’ activist Alyssa Milano ironically sparked a massive police presence this week after calling 911 because she believed an armed gunman was on her California property.

As per MailOnline, the call ignited a response that included seven Ventura County Sheriffs’ vehicles, one K-9 unit, a police helicopter and one Los Angeles Fire Department team that sat down the street on standby.
Milano called the cops from her five bed, six bath, 8,000 square foot, $2.5 million home in the upscale gated community, describing the suspect as ‘male, 40-years old, with a long rifle’.
Turns out it was just a neighbourhood teen with an air gun shooting at squirrels… whoops!
The male teenager witnessed the emergency response and later realised he was the cause and turned himself in.
Here’s where things get a bit awkward…
Crazy irony right here. Calling the police to your $2.5 million Los Angeles home and having 7 vehicles, helicopters, K9 units and fire trucks turn up to protect you? Does Alyssa Milano know how many hungry children that could feed? How many community programs this would serve? How many classroom supplies or childcare programs? Mental health services? I’m not sure how many either but I bet it would be loads of them.
That’s not to say effective police reform isn’t a very real issue that needs dealing with. There’ve been more than enough incidents just over the last few months that prove something needs to be done. The key word though is ‘reform’, not ‘defund’. If Alyssa Milano got her wish, who would she call when there’s a mystery gunman going around shooting squirrels in her gated community? Social workers? Neighbourhood watch? Much more reassuring to know there are highly trained professionals on standby who can show up with weapons, dogs and helicopters to make sure you won’t get shot to death.
Like Alyssa Milano, most people would call 911 too if they thought there was a gunman lurking around their property. Only difference is most people aren’t calling to eliminate the police budget, and the reason why is because we need them around for moments like this. Wonder if this will change her mind on the topic whatsoever? Doubt it.
