WWI doesn’t seem to get as much love from Hollywood as WWII, which is maybe because it’s less recent or took place before the invention of TV and movies, but that could all be about to change with ‘All Quiet On The Western Front’.
Here’s the synopsis and the trailer:
The gripping story of a young German soldier on the Western Front of World War I. Paul and his comrades experience first-hand how the initial euphoria of war turns into desperation and fear as they fight for their lives, and each other, in the trenches. The film from director Edward Berger is based on the world renowned bestseller of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque.
An epic trailer for an epic war. What’s interesting is that this is being told from the German perspective rather than that of the Allies. Too often we see things from the perspective of ‘our side’ or the winners and that can muddle the truth a little but, but the message here seems to be that war is hell for everyone involved. Both sides of any war suffer the brutality of warfare, with young adults witnessing and engaging in unimaginable horrors no matter what uniform they were wearing.
Actually surprising this won’t make it to the big screen, but we’ll definitely be checking it out when it drops on Netflix on 28 October. Can’t wait.
