That’s body cam footage from one of the Santa Fe police officers who attended the set of Rust after Alec Baldwin’s prop gun went off. It seems that soon after Halyna Hutchins was shot, everyone was still asking about her condition, not realising she wasn’t going to make it. Which makes it all the more haunting.
Just before the clip begins, they were apparently talking about Joel Souza, the film’s director, who was also wounded by the bullet. “What’s her story?” asks Baldwins, referring to Hutchins. “A little bit rougher” is the reply. Shortly after, she was dead.
You kinda feel bad for Baldwin too after watching this. The way he’s dealt with this whole tragedy has been kinda bizarre. I don’t know who’s advising him or what they’re telling him to say but it seems any time he discusses the incident, he makes himself look even more guilty. Not in the clip above, though. He looks genuinely shocked and baffled as to how he managed to shoot two people from a prop gun. Afterwards, he met with detectives at the Sheriff’s office:
I honestly sympathise with the guy a little bit. Yeah OK telling the media that the gun fired itself while it was in his hands was a mind-boggling decision, but it’s still sad to see a man look so confused and distressed after being responsible for a horrible, tragic accident. RIP Halyna Hutchins and thoughts with her friends and family – let’s hope they manage to find peace and justice somehow.
