I don’t really think that there are a many crimes out there worse than paedophilia, but what is a punishment befitting the crime of completely and utterly shattering a child’s innocence and leaving them traumatised for the rest of his life?

If you’re the state of Alabama, then it’s surgical castration. The state have recently passed a bill requiring paedophiles to be chemically castrated upon their release from prison. It now needs to be signed off by Governor Kay Ivey and it will be made law. Given that this is Alabama – one of the most backwards states out there that just made abortion illegal – I imagine that this is probably going to happen.

Here’s Republican law maker Steve Hurst’s justification for the bill:

They have marked this child for life and the punishment should fit the crime.

I had people call me in the past when I introduced it and said don’t you think this is inhumane?

I asked them what’s more inhumane than when you take a little infant child, and you sexually molest that infant child when the child cannot defend themselves or get away, and they have to go through all the things they have to go through.

If you want to talk about inhumane – that’s inhumane.

If we do something of this nature it would deter something like this happening again in Alabama and maybe reduce the numbers.

I mean you can’t really fault his logic there, even if it does seem like a bit of a barbaric practice. The alternative to chemical castration include drugs to reduce sexual urges, but these do have certain side effects including blood clots and allergies. There’s also the lack of a deterrent factor as well.

To be honest, I’m not normally one to side with Alabama but I think if someone is gonna have sex with a poor defenceless baby against their will then yeah, why not chemically castrate them? It’s a reversible process and it means there’s no chance of them ruining anyone’s life ever again. Not sure what the reoffending rate amongst paedophiles is but even if it’s really low -which I doubt – this seems like a better idea. So sue me.
