Despite being intended as a limited, standalone series, the massive success of Adolescence means we’re now probably going to get a Season 2 of the hit Netflix show, with Stephen Graham’s Snatch co-star Brad Pitt already ‘in talks’ to make it happen.
The controversial drama, starring Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper, has smashed viewing records and become one of the most-watched shows on Netflix around the world.
The production company behind the show was Plan B Entertainment, formed in 2001 by Brad Pitt, Brad Grey, Kristin Hahn and Jennifer Aniston. Brad Pitt is now the sole owner of the company, which has been behind movies and shows including 12 Years a Slave, Moonlight, The Underground Railroad and 3 Body Problem.
Plan B co-presidents Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner told Deadline they were speaking to director Philip Barantini about the ‘next iteration’ of the show.
Gardner said they were thinking about how they can ‘widen the aperture, stay true to its DNA, [and] not be repetitive’, but did not reveal much else.
I think the most likely scenario is that Adolescence will be turned into an anthology series, with each season covering a separate and unique story that explores other issues that today’s youth and parents face. After all, we don’t need a continuation to what we saw in Season 1, do we?
Maybe Adolescence Season 2 could be about a young girl being brainwashed by makeup influencers selling unrealistic beauty standards online, or maybe a young gay lad who is convinced by the internet that he’s transgender? I guess there’s plenty of topical themes they could explore that Keir Starmer can then be completely blown away by and demand that the episodes be streamed in schools around the country.
When asked about Season 2 of Adolescence previously, Stephen Graham had told Variety:
‘Possibly, let’s see how the figures are. But yeah, there’s the possibility of developing another story.’
Not sure which figures he’s referring to, but obviously the first one did monster numbers and I’m guessing they’ll drive a truckload of cash to his doorstep to write the second one, so fully expect Season 2 of Adolescence to be green-lit in the coming months.
Let’s just hope it doesn’t get in the way of Stephen Graham playing the next James Bond, eh?
