It’s taken a few days for them to ‘investigate’ the situation, but The Academy have finally released a statement on just what they think on the matter – and it doesn’t look good for Will Smith.

Here’s what they had to say:
Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated.
While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently.
Mr. Smith’s actions at the 94th Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in-person and on television.
Mr. Rock, we apologize to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in that moment.
We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what transpired during what should have been a celebratory event.
The Academy’s board of governors met Wednesday to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Smith for violations against the group’s standards of conduct.
Smith has the opportunity to defend himself in a written response before the board meets again on April 18.
Disciplinary action for Smith could include suspension, expulsion or other sanctions.
Yeah, doesn’t look too good for him there does it, but I suppose there wasn’t really anything else that they could do in this situation because you can’t really have Will Smith stomping around slapping people without being punished because of the dangerous precedent that it will set.
Will be very interesting to see how severely they end up punishing him though. I doubt they’ll take his Oscar away but wouldn’t that be so completely badass of them? We’ll see come April 18th I guess.
For more of the same, check out what Joe Rogan has to say about the situation. Obviously he isn’t happy.
