A University In Ireland Is Teaching A Course On ‘How To Be An Influencer’

It’s fair to say that most university degrees are fairly useless these days, but how about a course on how to be an influencer? Not only will you learn how to become famous on the internet, there’s also a module on how to deal with getting ‘cancelled’ (seriously).

Beginning next September, South East Technological University (SETU) in Carlow, Ireland, will offer a bachelor of arts degree in content creation and social media, reports the BBC. Among the modules you can choose from are creative video, celebrity studies, psychology, data analytics, podcasting and crisis management.

The most latter module, ‘crisis management’, is a pretty funny way of saying ‘how not to get cancelled’. It will teach wannabe influencers how to deal with ‘critical and unexpected situations,’ according to the uni’s website. Which I’m guessing includes pearls of wisdom such as ‘how to write an apology on Instagram’, ‘how to delete all the dumb sh1t you wrote on social media 15 years ago’ and  ‘how to cry on camera so everyone feels sorry for you.’ All quite funny but also pretty sad really.

Don’t get me wrong – if someone wants to be an influencer, then knock yourself out. They give Sick Chirpse plenty of content to work with so we love them! I just don’t think they should be offering classes on how to be an influencer at universities, the way you need to teach people how to be doctors or engineers. Just be good-looking, charismatic and post things online. It’s not that complicated, is it?

P.S. I say all this with a degree that’s basically useless and has nothing to do whatsoever with blogging dumb stories like this. Still, at least I have something to fall back on eh? Sigh…

P.P.S. Don’t these students know that AI-generated influencers are coming for their jobs?
