You’ve gotta admit that when you went round to someone’s house for a joint and they had a novelty weed grinder then you probably thought that they were pretty cool, but I doubt you ever thought how dangerous such an item could be in the wrong hands.

Fast forward to Birmingham New Street on Halloween 2022 and the full power of a novelty weed grinder has been unleashed after the whole station was evacuated when one was mistaken for an actual grenade. Sure, the grinder was shaped like a grenade but even so you’ve gotta think that someone probably overreacted when they spotted it there?
The station was evacuated from roughly 3.30pm until 4;45pm. The trains were probably already late/cancelled or striking so I doubt that this affected too many people in that respect, but it was probably still pretty annoying for anyone in the area to have to go and stand around outside the station rather than on the platform or somewhere in the station where they could grab food or a drink.
Here’s what British Transport Police said about the incident:
The item has now been assessed and deemed non-suspicious. It’s a cannabis grinder designed to resemble a hand grenade.
The item has now been assessed by specialist officers and is no longer being treated as suspicious.
Although the lines have now reopened, trains may still be cancelled, revised or delayed by up to 100 minutes as services return to normal
So has the item been assessed and is no longer suspicious? Not sure if they mention that enough in the statement.
Anyway, I suppose the police/British Transport Police do have to take the appropriate amount of caution but you would think that they might have been able to tell that it wasn’t a real grenade fairly easily? Good thing those specialist officers were in the vicinity to make that judgment call fairly rapidly. Maybe novelty grinders aren’t actually that cool? Be careful with them if they look like this anyway.
For more of the same, check out when this guy spent six hours grinding £700 worth of weed. Ouch.
