So yeah, pretty much like the headline said when people in Ghana can’t afford to import American movie posters then it falls to a local artist to try and interpret the movie as best they can in the promotional posters. Only most of the time, these posters are completely different to the movies that they’re trying to promote, to the point that it’s actually hilarious.
I mean how the hell can you try and promote Mission Impossible as a movie where Tom Cruise is a middle aged Chinese man? Or Freddy Vs Jason when Freddy isn’t even in the poster? Or whatever the hell is going on in the Alien poster – the faces are drawn so badly that it kinda looks like two aliens are going to end up fighting each other to the death. Admittedly that would probably be a good movie, but it’s not actually what it’s about.
The list goes on and on with these posters and even if they were actually decent posters that described what was going on, the whole style of them is just completely weird and bizarre. Is this a Ghanaian drawing style or what? I don’t really get it but it’s cool to look at all these interpretations and laugh at most of them.
A couple of them are actually OK and are just about passable, like the Desperado one and the Evil Dead ones, although they probably only work because they’re really dumb movies that can kind of get away with having really dumb posters. Not every movie can be so lucky though, as you’ll see when you go down this list.
Apparently this practice isn’t just limited to Ghana and it happens all over the world in less economically developed countries that can’t afford American posters. Unfortunately I’ve only been able to find a stockpile of the Ghanaian posters so far, but if anyone wants to email us in any other styles of dumb posters from all over the world feel free ([email protected]). In the meantime enjoy these ones, and if you want to see even more dumb Ghanaian movie posters check them out here.
