The Entourage Movie Is Confirmed

Entourage was one of my favourite TV shows of the mid 00’s, at least in its first few seasons before it kinda lost steam towards the end. But then, I can’t think of many shows that run longer than 5 or 6 seasons that don’t lost it towards the end of their run as there’s just the feeling that it’s all been done before and there isn’t really anywhere else you can go with the characters after so long. All the best shows seem to finish around season five or six (except The Shield) and although it’s pretty sad to see them go it’s way better that they bow out on a high note than a low one. Entourage did get kinda predictable towards the end but it was kinda predictable all the way through – the guys would always get out the mess they were in via some fluke or lucky coincidence – so it wasn’t that terrible but I did kinda get the impression I was only really watching the last couple of seasons to see where all the characters ended up rather than because it was still must see television.

Ever since it finished in 2011 – and even before that- there has been talk of the series being made into a feature length movie, mainly because of the success of the Sex And The City movies and the fact that Entourage has been described as the male version of Sex And The City (which it pretty much is – girls dream of getting cocktails with their glamorous friends and talking about their sex lives, whereas guys dream of being rich superstars and hanging out with the guys and banging loads of bitches) and both shows are made by HBO over in the states. So it seemed like a no brainer that the movie would eventually appear, the only surprise is that it took so long for it to show up.

Doug Ellin (who created Entourage) is set to direct the movie based on a screenplay he wrote and Mark Wahlberg (who the show is based upon) is back to executively produce it, while they’re currently working on deals to lock down the five main characters which should probably go down without a hitch. I’m sure you’ll be seeing people like Lloyd and Seth Green show up again too as movies like this tend to include all the Easter Eggs for the old fans.

I’m not sure how I feel about it though. Although I do kinda miss Vince and the guys (especially given the dearth of shit television that seems to exist these days, especially in the 20-30 minute comedies section. Excluding The League and Curb Your Enthusiasm of course), like I said in this first paragraph the series did feel like it had kind of run its course and I’m not sure if they can reinvent it by bringing it back to the big screen.

I didn’t manage to catch the Sex And The City movie – I was meant to see it with this girl I liked after I finished my uni finals but she ditched me and went with her housemate and I was only really going to go because I had the hots for her – but most ~~people~~ girls I know who saw it told me they really enjoyed it, whilst everyone seemed to think that the second one was really lame, which kind of implies that and Entourage movie could be very hit or miss. I’m also very sceptical as to whether the first one was actually any good or not because I’m pretty sure the only reason they loved it so much was because these characters were finally back in their lives getting up to their usual tricks. I remember both SATC movies were criticised for being too long too, and of essentially rehashing old story ideas and just being a feature length episode of the TV show. I know that’s kinda the point, but I guess I’m wanting a bit more from a feature length movie of the show.

The plot details of the Entourage movie are fairly sketchy at the moment but apparently it will pick up 6 months after the end of the series and Ari Gold will still be mulling over his dream job offer to run a major studio despite the fact that he just recently quit the business to appease his long suffering wife. Again, that just sounds like rehashing a storyline that existed over about 8 series of the show so it doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence.

Mark Wahlberg had the following statement to make about it though which is encouraging: ‘The movie is going to get back to the basics, kind of like the beginning of the series. We had very strong female characters, but we want the guys to get back to just being guys … I think they were all weighed down by these strong women towards the end of the series, so we are going to get them going crazy everyone wants to see them get nuts again.’

I really, really, really hope it does actually do that and doesn’t end up being completely soft and ruining all those great characters from the show before the inevitable sequel comes out and ruins them even more. I mean, I’m going to go and see it whatever so they might as well make it good right? I also hope they make Turtle fat again because it just wasn’t the same with him being skinny. I guess it will probably be out next summer or something so I’ll let you know what I think about it then, but if anyone connected with the movie is reading this then PLEASE MAKE IT GOOD.
