The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey has revealed that a part of her ‘regrets’ coming out as non-binary, two years after revealing that she is genderfluid and uses they/them pronouns.
At the time, Ramsey said that ‘being gendered isn’t something that I particularly like’, but now says they are in two minds about coming out, after seeing that the reaction was a ‘mixed bag’.
Speaking to The Observer, Bella confessed: ‘Part of me looks back and I wish that I didn’t, because I didn’t want it to become a headline and a big thing.
‘And obviously it was going to, and I didn’t really understand that at the time. And I wasn’t really prepared for that. But on the other hand, people have said to me that it’s been very helpful for them seeing some representation.
‘So it’s been a mixed bag, but overall, I think it was a good thing, just for me living more freely, without feeling like I’m keeping a secret’.
The British actress, who made her name on Game Of Thrones as Lyanna Mormont, did note that she’s still very much non-binary and happy to talk about, but just wishes people would be ‘chill’ about it. Ramsey previously told the New York Times that she finds it ‘exciting’ when she’s referred to as ‘he.’ Which makes things a tad more confusing, I think?
‘I guess my gender has always been very fluid. Someone would call me she or her and I wouldn’t think about it, but I knew that if someone called me he it was a bit exciting.’
Ramsey, who wears a chest binder ‘90% of the time’ when filming The Last of Us, said she ticks ‘non-binary’ if it is an option on a form, before adding: ‘I’m very much just a person.
‘Being gendered isn’t something that I particularly like, but in terms of pronouns, I really couldn’t care less.’
Well, whatever makes her happy at the end of the day.
I do wonder if there’s even one non-binary famous person out there who hasn’t told the world they are non-binary, as it’s not really something we need to know about anyway. Besides, if celebrities kept their gender identities, sexual preferences, and private lives to themselves, there would be nothing for the trolls and haters to say.
Bella Ramsey isn’t the first celebrity to ‘regret’ coming out as non-binary, mind you. A while back, Demi Lovato fully switched back from they/them to she/her pronouns after admitting that being non-binary was ‘absolutely exhausting’. Fair enough really.
