It looks like Disney have realised what a disaster they have on their hands with the new Snow White because they’ve cancelled the UK premiere of the movie in London, and also plan to ‘scale back’ the Hollywood premiere of the film amidst fears of backlash against both Gal Gadot & Rachel Zegler, and the ‘woke’ direction of the movie.
The whole premise of the movie is the mirror on the wall telling Gal Gadot that she’s less attractive than Rachel Zegler, which is pretty ridiculous in itself, but only one of about a billion things wrong with the Snow White remake since it was announced three years ago.
The first red flag was Peter Dinklage bizarrely ripping into Disney for using actual, real-life dwarves for the 7 Dwarves, and then actually caving to his criticism and putting seven dwarf actors out of work. Disney then tried introducing a cast of full-size, diverse dwarves of both genders to play the 7 Dwarves, before eventually settling for CGI dwarves instead. How the hell are you going to have Snow White and the 7 Dwarves without any real dwarves?!
Then, lead star Rachel Zegler began ripping into the original Snow White movie from the 1930s because it didn’t fit in with her modern world view, and professed her disdain for the beloved character that she’s privileged enough to be playing nearly 90 years later. Not a good PR strategy, as it turns out.
As if the movie wasn’t cursed enough already, Israel’s war on Palestine then kicked off with both actresses holding strong positions on opposite sides. Gal Gadot famously served in the IDF and recently spoke at the Anti-Defamation League’s annual summit in New York, where she pledged allegiance to Israel. Meanwhile, Rachel Zegler has been in full ‘Free Palestine’ mode. Which means both ladies have loads of political heat on them, which isn’t ideal with the premieres round the corner and the fact this movie was already looking like a disaster anyway.
And so, Disney have spent $250,000,000 on something already completely embarrassing and it hasn’t even been released yet. Just imagine how ready Disney were to pat themselves on the back over this new, progressive Snow White movie, only for it to end up being a total disaster on every level. They’re shutting down/scaling back international premieres because they don’t want to draw attention to their new big budget blockbuster!
The biggest shocker now would be if Snow White actually turns out to be a decent movie, but that seems unlikely at this point. It actually may end up being known as the most cursed movie in Hollywood history. Definitely one Disney classic that should have been left well and truly alone.
