Brad Sigmon, 67, pictured above, is a very bad man. Back in 2001, he killed his ex-girlfriend’s parents by tying them up in their home and beating them to death with a baseball bat in a crack-fueled rage. He also tried to shoot his girlfriend, but missed, and she luckily escaped.
Today (Friday March 7), Brad Sigmon will be executed by firing squad in his native South Carolina – the first execution of its kind for 15 years.
Sigmon will be strapped to a firing squad chair with a hood over his head and a target over his heart, while three volunteers shoot him to death from 15 feet away.
Sigmon personally requested the firing squad after fearing the electric chair would “burn and cook him alive,” according to his attorney. He also rejected a lethal injection after three previous inmates took more than 20 minutes to die after receiving the fatal dose of pentobarbital.
Sigmon was convicted of the baseball bat killings in 2001, after carrying out the murders because he was upset that his ex-girlfriend Rebecca Barbare had left him. After smoking crack cocaine and drinking with a buddy, he told his friend he would “get Becky for leaving him the way she did,” and “tie her parents up.”
Sure enough, that’s exactly what he did, tying them up in separate rooms in their home and going back and forth as he beat them to death.
And so, I don’t think anyone is feeling too much sympathy for Brad Sigmon today as he finally meets his maker. I can’t say I’m a big fan of the death penalty, but I don’t feel bad for anyone who meets the death penalty requirements either. Still, there have been cases where people have received the death penalty, or nearly received it, for crimes they didn’t commit.
I’m also fairly sure that the stats show it doesn’t deter criminals at all, who may even prefer to be executed for their crimes rather than spend the rest of their lives behind bars.
All things considered, a firing squad is probably the best way to go. Like Brad Sigmon astutely pointed out, the lethal injection can take ages to kill you and the electric chair is just straight up horrific.
Although it is pretty mental that anyone would care enough about Sigmon’s feelings to give him a choice of how he wants to be executed. This man viciously murdered two innocent people with a baseball bat ffs! You could argue that the fact he got to live another 20+ years is a major injustice in itself, although I suppose spending it all behind bars can’t have been much fun.
Best of luck to the shooters today. Have at it, boys!
