A lower-tier German football match between FC Taxi II and Rot-Weiss Mulheim III got called off after referee Stefan Kahler had his balls bitten by an unruly child.

As Kahler checked players over before the game, a child of one of the players ran up to him and bit him in the left nut. Kahler reportedly buckled over in extreme pain and had no choice but to call off the game. The two clubs will now have the game rescheduled for later in the season.

In his refereeing report, Kahler said: “While I was checking the FC Taxi players’ ID, a small child was doing warm-up exercises alongside the players. He came closer and closer to me, then suddenly – to my complete surprise – gave me a sharp bite in my left testicle.”

His report continued: “I did not start the game, because of the pain I was in and the situation. It was the child of one of the FC Taxi players who was to blame.”

No idea if Kahler will be officiating the rescheduled game whenever it takes place, but he may want to wear a protective cup if he does. Although in fairness you never expect to get bitten in the balls by a child when officiating a game of football. Kicked in the shins? Bitten on the leg? Maybe. But there’s nothing that can prepare you for having a set of teeth clamp down on your left testicle while going through your pre-match routine. It must have been quite a shock to the system.

And so, I don’t really blame Stefan Kahler for taking his ball and going home. Might even need to call for reform so that children aren’t allowed on the pitch before the game kicks off. I mean, I know you’ve got little kids walking onto the field with the players before kickoff in all the top leagues in the world, but maybe it isn’t as necessary in the 8th tier league of German football.
