An Indiana man who was recently pardoned by Donald Trump for his participation in the January 6 riots has been shot and killed by police during a traffic stop.
Matthew Huttle, 42, resisted arrest during the stop on an Indiana state road on Sunday.
Indiana State Police explain:
‘An altercation took place between the suspect and the officer, which resulted in the officer firing his weapon and fatally wounding the suspect.’
Huttle was in possession of a firearm himself during the incident.
The officer who shot Huttle has been placed on administrative leave as per protocol. Jasper County Sheriff Patrick Williamson says:
‘For full transparency, I requested the Indiana State Police to investigate this officer involved shooting,’ stated Jasper County Sheriff Patrick Williamson.
‘Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased as any loss of life is traumatic to those that were close to Mr. Huttle.’
Huttle was one of more than 1,550 people who were charged in the January 6, 2021, riots at the US Capitol, where individuals breached the building in an attempt to stop Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s election victory. One of the first things Trump did after officially coming into office the other week was to issue pardons to the rioters.
For what it’s worth, Huttle was already out of prison since July 17 2024, and seemed to have behaved himself since then. Could being pardoned by Donald Trump have prompted him to think he was above the law, leading to whatever altercation took place during this traffic stop?
The investigation will determine whether the police officer was within their rights to shoot Huttle dead. If so, maybe Trump can pardon him again, posthumously this time?
In any case, RIP Matthew Huttle and thoughts with his friends and family.
